“That’s what I’m interested in: the space in between, the moment of imagining what is possible and yet not knowing what that is.
~Julie Mehretu, contemporary artist

Batik is a traditional art form that has been practiced for centuries in various cultures around the world. It involves using wax-resist dyeing techniques to create intricate designs and patterns on fabrics.

From its origins in ancient civilizations to its modern interpretations in fashion and design, the art of batik has played an important role in cultural heritage and continues to inspire creativity today.

Modern batik is a contemporary adaptation of the traditional Indonesian art of batik, which involves dyeing fabric using a wax-resist technique. In modern interpretations, artists and designers often incorporate innovative patterns, colors, and materials, blending traditional methods with contemporary aesthetics. This evolution has led to a diverse range of styles, from abstract designs to intricate motifs, making batik appealing to a broader audience.

Ruby fell in love with Modern Batik for it’s therapeutic benefits. The process of creating batik can be meditative and therapeutic, offering a form of relaxation and mindfulness for artists. Within each piece you can find a piece of her story, leaving that up to your interpretation - perhaps you can relate to, or find in her art the stories of a woman continually reinventing and rediscovering herself in a world where creative expression, women’s rights, and holistic understanding are constantly evolving.
